Onion

When selecting your onion varieties, keep in mind that the further north you are, the more hours of daylight you have during the summer.

Long Day: Require 14-16 hours of sunlight and generally do better in the north.
Intermediate Day: Require 12-14 hours of sunlight generally do better in the middle part of the U.S.
Short Day: Require 10-12 hours of sunlight and generally do better in the South
Day Neutral: Does not require any specific amount of daylight.

When Onion plants are first planted, there growth is first focused on growing roots and green tops. Once the top is formed, and a certain combination of temperature and light are reached, growth is then transferred over to the bulb. The size of the bulb depends on how many leaves there are and how large they are. The more leaves there are and the bigger they are, the bigger the bulb will be. The secret to onion success is to plant very early.
