Pea - Edible Pod (Snow)-(a.k.a. Mangetout Peas)

Sometimes called "sugar peas". The young, slender pods are eaten, very popular in Asian cooking, especially stir-fry! The vine tips and leaves can also be eaten. Harvest the pods when they are large but still flat with immature seeds.

Dwarf Grey Sugar Heirloom Open Pollinated Snow Pea	Dwarf Grey Sugar - Snow Pea (Dwarf Gray Sugar Cabbage Pea) (Pisum sativum) 57-66 days.      An old heirloom variety dating back to 1773, and introduced by D.M. Ferry & Co. in 1892. The Dwarf Gray Sugar Snow Pea vines grow to about 2-3', and are self supporting, requiring no staking. Green foliage has a lovely purplish tinge, and plants bear pretty, edible reddish-lavender blossoms. Blossoms make lovely garnish for your special dishes, so grow some extra for garnish, as those blossoms taken for accent will not develop into a pea pod. It is said that Dwarf Gray Sugar has the very best leaf tips, tendrils, and top leaves for eating (they are briefly steamed or stir-fried). The pods are delicious steamed or stir-fried. Flat, fleshy, curved, semi-pointed light-green pods grow to 3-5", being best when picked at 2½-3½". Pods grow in clusters at top of plant, making harvest easy. Progress #9 Heirloom Open Pollinated Shelling Pea	Progress #9 (a.k.a. Laxton's Progress #9, Greater Progress, and Blue Bantam) (Pisum sativum) 58-65 days.       A leading large-podded, home garden, heirloom variety. The Progress #9 Garden Pea is a superb tasting old-time favorite, bearing large 4-5" pods, with 6-9 peas each. Wrinkled, dark-green seeds are of fine quality. Pea - Southern Cowpea

Green seeds are roasted and used like peanuts. Dried seeds may be boiled and used in soups or stews, or ground and made into cakes. Scorched seeds are sometimes used as a coffee substitute. Immature pods are steamed or boiled and eaten whole. The green leaves are boiled and eaten like spinach, while in parts of Sudan and Ethiopia the roots are roasted and eaten. They also provide high-protein pasturage for pigs and cattle, as well as hay and silage (usually mixed with corn or sorghum).

California Blackeye #5 Heirloom Open Pollinated Southern Cowpea	California Blackeye #5 (a.k.a. Blackeye Cowpea #5) (Vigna unguiculata) 60-95 days.       A Southern home-garden favorite! The California Blackeye Cowpea #5 bears large, smooth seeds, cream colored with a black "eye", as the name suggests. They have delicious flavor, and can be used either fresh or dried. Often prepared with either ham or salt pork, and served with rice and spinach, the dish being called "Hoppin' John". They are very high in protein (20%), low in fat, and high in Vitamin B1. Plants of this variety are semi-spreading, erect, and high-yielding, with pods concentrating at the crown, making harvest easy. Pods grow to about 8-12".
