Cascadia (Pisum sativum) 58-70 days. A winner of taste tests, known for great flavor, the pods are distinctly sweeter, crisper and juicier than Sugar Snaps, with a full pea flavor. The Cascadia Edible Pod Pea is an heirloom-in-waiting, a vintage open-pollinated variety that produces good yields of succulent and tender, stringless 3-3½" pods, on compact, almost dwarf, 3' vines. Excellent fresh or for canning and freezing. These versatile peas can also be used like snow peas or left to mature for use as shell peas. Developed by Dr. James Baggett of Oregon State University. Sugar Snap (a.k.a. New Sugar Snap, Cascadia) (Pisum sativum) 53-72 days. The original sugar snap pea, and 1979 winner of the All-American Selections Award! The Sugar Snap Edible Pod Pea produces heavy yields of flavorful 2½-3½" pods, on tall 6' vines. Crisp, sweet pods are considered by many to be the best flavored of all the edible pod peas. Pods are delicious fresh, and great in salads, can be snapped just like green beans. Tastes great steamed. Freezes well, does not tolerate the heat of canning well. Can be left on the vines until mature for excellent quality shelling peas. Does develop strings at maturity, so they will need to be stripped. Vines require support. Frost resistant. The vines of the Super Sugar Snap Edible Pod Pea are vigorous and prolific, growing to 55-65" and producing twice as many pods as most varieties. Try fresh off the vine, with dip, in salads, steamed or stir fried. Makes an excellent addition to vegetable trays! Bears over a long period in both cold and hot weather. Dwarf Grey Sugar - Snow Pea (Dwarf Gray Sugar Cabbage Pea) (Pisum sativum) 57-66 days. An old heirloom variety dating back to 1773, and introduced by D.M. Ferry & Co. in 1892. The Dwarf Gray Sugar Snow Pea vines grow to about 2-3', and are self supporting, requiring no staking. Green foliage has a lovely purplish tinge, and plants bear pretty, edible reddish-lavender blossoms. Blossoms make lovely garnish for your special dishes, so grow some extra for garnish, as those blossoms taken for accent will not develop into a pea pod. It is said that Dwarf Gray Sugar has the very best leaf tips, tendrils, and top leaves for eating (they are briefly steamed or stir-fried). The pods are delicious steamed or stir-fried. Flat, fleshy, curved, semi-pointed light-green pods grow to 3-5", being best when picked at 2½-3½". Pods grow in clusters at top of plant, making harvest easy.
