Broccoli

For an early harvest, sow Broccoli seeds indoors about 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost. Broccoli needs fertile, friable soil that has good moisture holding ability.

Broccoli is a biennial, therefore they will not produce seeds until the second year. Early Broccoli varieties planted in the spring do sometimes produce seeds in the fall of the first year of growth. Do not harvest any heads from broccoli plants you wish to save for seed. Broccoli heads are made up of flower bud clusters. If you eat the Broccoli flowers, you won't have any seeds!

Dig up broccoli plants late in the fall the first year and store them between 32 and 40°F and at about 90% relative humidity. You may experience excessive rotting. Replant the broccoli plants in early spring, and the plants will produce tall seed stalks with abundant seeds in the summer.
