November 2011
Greetings Heirloom Gardening Friends!
Now that the gardening season is over for most of you, are you wondering what you can do to put the garden to bed for this year and prepare for next year? If your garden needs lime, now is a good time to apply it and till it in. To cover the ground for the winter you can spread organic matter such as leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, straw, rotted hay or raw manure directly over the soil. Also, if you plan on any raised beds for next year, you can build them now, and even place black plastic mulch over them, so that in the spring the soil will heat up sooner and you can start planting your crops earlier!
A reminder as you clean up your heirloom garden at the end of the season, if you had any problems with plant disease, it is best to remove them from the garden and dispose of the plants properly, to reduce the continuation of disease in your garden for next year. Tilling diseased plants in is not the best option, as it does not bury crop residues deep enough to be of help in the eradication of disease.
This is a good time to plan next year's garden. The end of the season, is the opportune time to look over what varieties you planted this year, to consider what you and your family liked or didn't, and to plan for what new heirloom varieties you may want to try next garden season. We like to draw up a garden map of what we grow in our garden each year, this is very helpful in remembering exactly what we planted and where. This comes in handy when making plans for what we are going to grow next year, and is a great help in rotating our veggies to help reduce continuation of diseases and pests in the garden.
All orders shipped now will contain only seeds packed for 2012. When those that are still out of stock come in, you will again see an "Add to Cart" button next to that variety on the website. To all those who have asked about our special varieties of dry beans, we are sad to update with the news that we lost them to the weather at the end of the season. It was a great disappointment to us, especially after all the work it takes. We had such rains this Fall during the harvest time for these beans, that we lost pretty much all of them. :(
