Burgess Strain Buttercup (Cucurbita maxima) 95-100 days. A turban type squash with dark green rind, and blocky shape, has a gray "button" on the blossom end. The Burgess Strain Buttercup Squash has an excellent flavored, fiberless, dark orange flesh, which is thick and dry. Very good winter keeper, also good for canning. Fruits grow to 3-5 lbs. Bush Buttercup, Emerald Strain (Cucurbita maxima) 85-100 days. Upright 3-4' wide bushes produce heavy yields of small smooth rounded turbans, the color of a Blue Hubbard squash. The Emerald Strain Bush Buttercup has thick, deep, sweet, dry, yellow-orange flesh. Fruits are high quality, 3-5 lbs. each. Delicious baked, steam, cans or freezes well. Delicata (a.k.a. Delicatessen, Sweet Potato Squash, Delicata Sweet Potato, and Peanut) (Cucurbita Pepo) 95-100 days. Introduced in 1894 by Peter Henedrson, this variety remains popular today for it's sweet, delicious, sweet potato-like flavor. The Delicata Squash gets the nickname Peanut Squash from it's oblong shape, growing to 7-9" in length, by 3" in diameter. This unique squash is highly attractive with its ivory skin, striped with dark green from end to end. The flesh is fine-grained and light orange in color. Golden Delicious (a.k.a. Hubbard Golden Delicious) (Cucurbita Maxima) 100-105 days. Introduced by Gill Bros. Seed Co. of Portland Oregon in 1926, this variety was developed from a cross between Delicious and Boston Marrow. Heart or top shaped, the Golden Delicious Squash has a striking red-orange exterior with bright orange-yellow, thick, fine-grained flesh. Fruits grow to 7-9 lbs., measuring 10-12" in length, by 8" in diameter. Originally developed for use in baby food, these squash are sweet and delicious, with excellent flavor, they are not watery, keep well, but also freeze and can well. great baked or in soups. Hubbard, Blue (Cucurbita maxima) 100-120 days. Another New England favorite, this reliable old-time variety produces large, 15- 40 lb. fruits (we actually got a 45.5 lb beauty in our 2009 garden!), on vigorous vines. The Blue Hubbard Squash is a pretty blue-gray-green, slightly ridged, coarsely-warted, with a neck at both ends. Flesh is bright orange, fine textured and sweet. Great in pies, or cut into pieces and baked or steamed. The hard shell makes this variety a very long keeper. Hubbard, Chicago Warted (a.k.a. Green Chicago Warted Hubbard, Hubbard Improved) (Cucurbita maxima) 105-115 days. An old heirloom developed by Budlong Gardens of Chicago and introduced by Vaughans Seed Store of Chicago in 1894. The Chicago Warted Hubbard Squash's very vigorous vines bear hard shelled, dark green fruits, heavily warted and of a true hubbard shape. Fruits weigh in around 12-16 lbs., and measure 12-14", by 10" in diameter. Flesh is thick, dry, sweet, and fine-grained. Great for pies, baking, or freezing. Hubbard, Golden (a.k.a. Red Hubbard,and Genesee Red Hubbard) (Cucurbita maxima) 90-105 days. Introduced in 1898, this enduring beauty is on of the most attractive of the hubbards. The Golden Hubbard Squash is teardrop in shape, with a hard, moderately warted, brilliant red shell, bearing tan stripes at the blossom end. Fruits weigh 8-10 lbs., and are 10-12" in length, by 8-9" in diameter. Flesh is solid, thick, sweet, fine-grained, and dry, orange- yellow in color, and with fine flavor. Hubbard, True Green Improved (a.k.a. True Hubbard, and Improved Hubbard) (Cucurbita maxima) 100-115 days. Originally introduced for sale in the 1840s by seedsman, J.H. Gregory, who named it after Elizabeth Hubbard of Marblehead, MA. who, recognizing the qualities of this excellent squash brought it to the Gregory's stating that "it was the best squash she had ever tasted in her life". The True Green Improved Hubbard Squash has a beautiful dark bronze-green shell, tapered at both ends. The flesh is sweet, dry, and fine-grained, golden yellow in color, and delicious in flavor. Sugar Loaf (a.k.a. Tan Delicata) (Cucurbita pepo) 100 days. A Delicata type squash with mild, sweet, brown sugar flavor, bred and released by Dr. James R. Baggett, Oregon Agricultural Experimental Station in 1990. The Sugar Loaf Squash is cylindrical, tan with dark green stripes running end to end. Sweet Dumpling (a.k.a. Vegetable Gourd) (Cucurbita pepo) 95-105 days. Very productive plant, with up to 10 squash per compact vine. The Sweet Dumpling Squash is teacup shaped, creamy in color, with dark green stripes. One of the sweetest squashes around, with tender flesh, delicious baked and stuffed. Sweet Meat (a.k.a. Sweet Meat Oregon)(Cucurbita maxima) 85-110 days. A favorite of the Northwest, developed in Oregon, and introduced by the Gill Bros. Seed Company of Portland, Oregon. The vines of the Sweet Meat Squash are very vigorous, and require a good amount of room to grow, crowding out other plants if not given their space. Fruits have a very hard, thick slate-gray skin, with a thick golden-yellow flesh, sweet dry, and fiberless. Fruits grow to about 10-20 lbs., and are very hardy, keeping for many months. They have a delicious buttery flavor that sweetens with age. This squash is excellent baked or in pies. Can be baked, and the leftovers frozen for later use. Because of its tender dry texture, it can be used in place of summer squash in recipes during the winter, when the summer squash are all done with for the year. Item No. SqSwM |

Table Queen Acorn (a.k.a. Danish, Pepper Squash, Des Moines) (Cucurbita pepo) 75-90 days. A dark green acorn shaped heirloom squash that is descended from a heart shaped squash grown by the Arikara Indians in the early 1800s. The Table Queen Acorn Squash was first introduced by the Iowa Seed Co. in 1913. Deep orange flesh is fine-textured, sweet, dry, and thick. Good for baking, and immature fruit can also be used as a summer squash. Good for storage. Fruits weigh about 1 ½ lbs, and grow to 4 x 5 ½ in. Item No. SqTQA |

Turks Turban (a.k.a. Aladdin's Turban, Mexican Hat and Turk's Cap Gourd) (Cucurbita maxima) 80-125 days. Highly decorative and colorful buttercup type squash, this heirloom dates back to pre-1800. This variety has been gaining popularity for it's decorative qualities. The Turk's Turban Squash/Gourd is orange and red and white on green, with a distinctive cap or turban on top. The fruits grow to about 8-12" in diameter, and weigh 5-10 lbs. Keeps well if not bruised during harvest and storage. They are fair eating quality. Can be baked plain or stuffed. Waltham Butternut (Cucurbita moschata) 95-110 days. The most popular of the winter squashes. The Waltham Butternut Squash was introduced in 1970 by Bob Young of Waltham Massachusetts and is an All-American Selections Award winner. Buff colored rind with fine-textured, sweet orange flesh, that is creamy and rich, with a nutty flavor. Stores very well, lasting sometimes 6 months or even longer. Very resistant to vine borers. Vigorous and dependable. Fruits average 8-9" long, and weigh 3-6 lbs. Great for steaming, boiling, baking, or even harvest young and use as a summer squash. Item No. SqWB |

Vegetable Spaghetti (a.k.a. Spaghetti Squash) (Cucurbita pepo) 90 days. Introduced by Sakata Seed Co. of Japan, in 1934. May have originated in China. A popular low calorie alternative to pastas. The Vegetable Spaghetti Squash produces vigorous spreading vines, with 5-7 fruits per plant. Fruits have a buff skin, turning pale yellow at maturity, with a pale yellow interior flesh that breaks up into spaghetti like strands when cooked. Squash are 8-12" long, by 5-6 " in diameter. Boil whole for 20-30 min , or bake. Use as spaghetti with your favorite sauce, or as a pasta substitue in homemade macaroni and cheese. Or try with butter and salt and pepper. Its taste is nothing like spaghetti, it has a slight sweetness and, if not overcooked, is crunchy and somewhat watery, something like a cucumber.
