The predecessor to St. Clare’s heirloom watermelon seeds originated in Africa, and the watermelon was bitter and tough.  Watermelon seeds have been found in Egyptian tombs, including King Tut’s, dating back more than 4,000 years ago.

Egyptians experimented growing different varieties, and eventually designed a sweet, more tender fruit.  Since watermelon is 92% water, and is a natural canteen, the fruit quickly spread to many other countries.  Watermelons are part of the botanical family of vegetables such as cucumber, squash, and pumpkin, and are also classified as a fruit.  This tasty melon is the most popular fruit in the United States, and is packed with nutrients such as vitamin A and C, potassium, magnesium, and lycopene. The rind is edible, and watermelon seeds are delicious, and also quite healthy for you.  Watermelons have been used to treat heatstroke and as a diuretic, and have been known to relieve muscle tension, reduce blood pressure, kidney stones, painful arthritis,  and can help treat the prostate.  Some speculate it can even prevent cancer!

To grow watermelons in a warmer climate, place watermelon seeds directly in the ground, but, be sure to wait at least two weeks past the last frost date for your area, for the best results. If you live in a cooler zone, you can start the watermelon seeds indoors about a month before you are ready to plant to make sure they mature before the end of your season.
