(a.k.a. Trout, Couch Dog, Dalmation, Anasazi, Appaloosa) (Phaseolus vulgaris) 80 – 100 days.   Dry Bean   Organic Jacob’s Cattle is a popular New England favorite with legendary Native American roots. As the tale goes the Jacob’s Cattle Bush Bean was given by Maine’s Passamaqouddy Indians as a gift to Joseph Clark, the first white child born in Lubec, Maine. Many of the nicknames are derived from the markings of these plump, kidney-type beans, white with maroon speckles and splashes. Plants grow to approx. 24″, producing good yields of 4-5″ pods. Organic Jacob’s Cattle are delicious beans with an earthy, full flavor, boasting a slightly sweet aftertaste, holding up well to seasoning, and of fine velvety texture when cooked. Prized for use as dry beans, but also great as shelly beans when harvested earlier. Does well in cooler climates as well as hot or dry conditions.

Planting Instructions for Organic Jacob’s Cattle Bean Seeds

Sow Heirloom / Open Pollinated Jacob’s Cattle beans 1-2″ deep, 2-6″ apart, in rows 18-36″ apart, in full sun after danger of frost. Soaking Jacob’s Cattle bean seeds in water 1-2 hours before planting speeds germination. Germination occurs in 4-16 days in soil 60-85°F. Provide support for heirloom pole bean varieties. For heirloom snap beans, harvest when beans are 3-6″ long. For dry beans, leave pods on plants until pods are dry, brown, and crisp, and beans are hard and rattle in pod, if more drying is needed when danger of frost has arrived, pick pods or pull entire plant and hang upside down to dry further.
