Days to Maturity: 85-90 Days
First introduced to the U.S. market in 1881 by the renowned seed company, Peter Henderson & Co., the Green Nutmeg Cantaloupe has long been cherished for its exceptional flavor and distinctive appearance. This heirloom melon quickly became a favorite among gardeners and farmers alike, with its smooth, greenish-yellow skin and uniquely sweet, aromatic flesh. Named after the nutmeg spice for its slightly spicy, musky taste, this cantaloupe has stood the test of time as a summer treat.
The Green Nutmeg Cantaloupe offers a rich, sweet flavor that is delicately spiced, reminiscent of honey and melon with a subtle musky undertone. Its texture is tender yet firm, making it a joy to slice and serve fresh. The flesh is pale green, giving it a unique look when compared to the traditional orange-fleshed melons.
This variety grows to a medium size, with fruits typically weighing between 3 to 5 pounds. The melons are round to slightly oval in shape, with a smooth, thin rind that takes on a soft yellowish hue when fully ripe. The plants themselves are vigorous, sprawling across the garden with long vines that produce an abundance of fruit. Despite the sprawling nature, the vines are fairly manageable, making it a good choice for both smaller and larger garden spaces.
Well-suited to full sun, the Green Nutmeg Cantaloupe thrives in warm, sunny climates, with its growth habits being particularly ideal for regions with long growing seasons. It does best in well-drained, fertile soil, and like most melons, it appreciates a generous amount of space to spread.
Culinarily, this melon shines in a variety of ways. Whether sliced fresh, added to fruit salads, or blended into refreshing smoothies, its mild yet complex flavor profile is a delightful addition any dish. It is also excellent when paired with prosciutto or used to complement tangy cheeses.
With its firm texture and excellent shelf life, the Green Nutmeg Cantaloupe can be stored for a time after harvest, although it is best enjoyed fresh for maximum flavor. It is high in vitamins A and C, adding a refreshing and nutritious boost to your summer meals.
Disease Resistance: Resistant to Fusarium wilt.
