Annual

(Ipomoea) Blue Star Morning Glory

Days to Maturity: 65-75 Days

First introduced to American gardeners by the Ferry-Morse Seed Company in 1926, this variety has enchanted growers for nearly a century with its reliable beauty and easy growth. Originally cultivated in Central America, it has become a staple in ornamental gardens worldwide.

The Blue Star Morning Glory is named for its vibrant white or sky-blue petals radiating from a luminous white throat, with distinct darker blue, star-like markings. Each bloom reaches up to 4 inches across, opening in the morning and fading gracefully by evening. This vigorous climber can grow 10–12 feet tall, making it ideal for arbors, trellises, or fences.

Thriving in full sun, it prefers warm, well-drained soil and is surprisingly tolerant of heat. While not frost-hardy, it quickly establishes itself in summer gardens, blooming profusely until the first frost. It’s an easy-care choice, thriving even in poor soil conditions, though it appreciates occasional watering during dry spells.

Perfect for brightening up vertical spaces, Blue Star Morning Glory is a classic choice for ornamental borders or cottage gardens. The seeds can be collected and stored for future seasons, ensuring its place in your garden for years to come.

Planting Instructions for Blue Star Morning Glory Seeds

Start Blue Star Morning Glory seeds 4-5 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Soak Morning Glory seed for 48 hours in a wet paper towel or nick the seed coat with a knife to speed up germination. Use 3″ or larger pots and plant 2-3 seeds per pot 1/4″ deep. Morning Glory germinate at 70°F. After emergence, insert a small stake into the pot to keep the seedlings from becoming entangled. Morning Glory seeds may be planted outdoors in early summer when the soil has warmed up to about 70°F.

Note for Organic Growers!

Morning Glory or Moonflowers work as a squash bug deterrent. Plant one Morning Glory or Moonflower in between 2 or 3 Squash or Pumpkin plants. Squash bugs hate this family of plants.
