Planting Instructions for Iceland Poppy Seeds

Iceland Poppies prefer cooler climates and average to poor soil, so do not over-fertilize. Plant in well-drained, prepared soil. To start indoors, sprinkle seeds lightly over soil/growing medium. Bottom watering works best in pots/containers, so as to not damage tiny plants emerging from seeds, or else lightly mist with water. Alternatively, direct sow seeds outdoors, in full sun to part shade, in the fall or in spring while there may still be frosts; they like it cool. Scatter seeds on the surface of the soil and leave uncovered or just barely cover with a sprinkling of soil, they need light to germinate. Keep soil moist until seeds germinate. Poppy seeds take a long time to germinate, typically 20-30 days in soil 55-65°F. When seedlings are 2-3 in., thin to 12-18 in. apart. Water moderately once established. Pinch wilted blooms to promote a longer blooming season.  Leave a few blooms on the plants at the end of the blooming season if you want the plant to reseed itself the following spring.
