(Pisum sativum) 58-70 days.       A winner of taste tests, known for great flavor, the pods are distinctly sweeter, crisper and juicier than Sugar Snaps, with a full pea flavor. The Cascadia Edible Pod Pea is an heirloom-in-waiting, a vintage open-pollinated variety that produces good yields of succulent and tender, stringless 3-3½” pods, on compact, almost dwarf, 3′ vines. Excellent fresh or for canning and freezing. These versatile peas can also be used like snow peas or left to mature for use as shell peas. Developed by Dr. James Baggett of Oregon State University. Disease Resistance: Powdery Mildew, Pea Enation Mosaic Virus, and Pea Wilt.

Planting Instructions for Cascadia Pea Seeds

Cascadia Peas are a cool weather crop, that like well drained soil and plenty of organic matter to assist with moisture retention. Direct sow Cascadia peas as soon as soil can be worked in the spring. Plant Pea seeds in full sun, 1-1½” deep, 1 – 2″ apart, in rows 18-24″ apart. Cascadia pea seeds should germinate in 6-14 days at 45-75°F. No need to thin plants. Provide a trellis or other support for climbing varieties. Heirloom / Open Pollinated Bush Pea varieties usually do fine with a short trellis or planting in a block so Pea plants support each other. Harvest Heirloom / Open Pollinated Shelling Peas when pods are full and plump and peas are tender; Heirloom / Open Pollinated Snap Peas when the pods start filling out but are not yet fully mature; and Heirloom / Open Pollinated Snow Peas when pods are approx. 3″ long and still flat, before seeds start to fill out.

Never rebuke while you’re indignant about a fault committed – wait until the next day or even longer. And then, calmly, and with a purer intention, make your reprimand. You will gain more by a friendly word than by a three hour quarrel. – Jose’ Maria Escriva
