(Spinacia oleracea)  Giant Noble Spinach (A.K.A. Giant Noble, Giant Nobel, Noble Giant Spinach)

Days to Maturity: 40-50 Days

Introduced to American gardeners in 1926 by the W. Atlee Burpee Company, Giant Noble Spinach quickly became a trusted favorite for its remarkable size and reliability. Bred specifically to meet the demands of both home gardeners and commercial growers, it remains a popular choice for its vigorous growth and impressive yields nearly a century later.

Giant Noble Spinach is a classic variety known for its giant, crinkled, tender leaves with a touch of sweetness that sets it apart from standard spinach. Offering an extended harvest window, it grows up to an impressive 10 inches tall, with a plant spread up to 25 inches wide, in about 40 to 50 days. This spinach is bolt-resistant, highly frost-tolerant, and well-suited to fresh eating, freezing, or canning.

The flavor is mild and earthy with a hint of sweetness, making it equally delightful raw or cooked. Its large, deep green leaves, often growing up to 10 inches long, are ideal for wraps, steaming, or slicing into fresh salads. The upright plants provide generous yields and make harvesting a breeze.

This cool-weather crop thrives in both spring and fall gardens, performing best in full sun but tolerating partial shade. Able to withstand light frosts and even continue producing after frost, Giant Noble Spinach is a reliable and productive choice for gardeners.

In the kitchen, the sturdy leaves hold up beautifully in a variety of dishes, from sautéed sides to soups and creamy dips. They store well, staying fresh in the refrigerator for up to a week, and freeze exceptionally for long-term use. With high levels of vitamins A, C, and K, Giant Noble Spinach is not only delicious but also highly nutritious.

Disease Resistance: Resists common mildew, ensuring robust plants and healthy harvests.

Planting Instructions for Giant Noble Spinach Seeds

Spinach is a cool season crop, growing best in Spring and Fall. Rich, fertile, well-drained, soil is best for optimum production. Direct sow seeds in very early spring when soil can be worked and has reached 50°F or in Fall, in full sun or partial shade, ½” deep, 1” apart, in rows 12” apart. Germination usually occurs in 6-21 days in soil 50-65°F. Thin plants to 3-6” apart. Keep soil evenly moist. A good dose of fertilizer rich in nitrogen will help produce the best spinach.

Can begin harvesting baby greens from outside of plant when they reach 3-4”, and harvest entire plant upon reaching full maturity, before plant starts to set flowers, if buds begin to form, harvest immediately. Harvest in the morning for best flavor. Rinse in cold water and enjoy ASAP.
