Early Alaska (A.K.A. Alaska, Earliest of All)
Days to Maturity: 55–60 Days
Introduced in 1881 by famed breeder Thomas Laxton, this heirloom variety was first known as “Earliest of All.” It reached American gardens in 1882 via seedsman James J.H. Gregory and was renamed “Alaska” two years later, after a swift ocean liner. A true early-season performer, it remains the earliest shelling pea available. Semi-dwarf plants grow 24–36 inches tall and benefit from light support. Pale green pods, 2–3 inches long, contain 5–7 sweet, tender peas with a sweet, fresh flavor. Perfect for soups, stews, and spring salads, these peas are also excellent for canning or freezing. Rich in vitamins C, K, and A, along with B vitamins and folate, they are a top choice for spring and fall gardens, especially where space and timing are key.
