Introduced in 1881 by famed breeder Thomas Laxton, this heirloom variety was first known as “Earliest of All.” It reached American gardens in 1882 via seedsman James J.H. Gregory and was renamed “Alaska” two years later, after a swift ocean liner. A true early-season performer, it remains the earliest shelling pea available. Semi-dwarf plants grow 24–36 inches tall and benefit from light support. Pale green pods, 2–3 inches long, contain 5–7 sweet, tender peas with a sweet, fresh flavor.
