First introduced by Peter Henderson & Co. in 1922, Tendergreen Improved quickly became a go-to variety for its high yields, tender pods, and adaptability. In 1933, it was awarded the All-America Selections (AAS) winner title for its outstanding performance, and it has remained a top choice for home and market growers for over a century.
Tendergreen Improved is a great choice for large growers, big families, and market gardeners looking for a high-yielding, easy-to-grow bean. This strong, upright variety grows 18-20 inches tall and produces heavy harvests of 5-7″ round, meaty, stringless pods. Each pod contains 5-6 beans, and the plants continue producing for weeks with regular picking.
With a short growing season and excellent heat tolerance, Tendergreen Improved thrives in a wide range of climates, making it a top choice for those who need a steady, abundant harvest. The plants are disease-resistant, low-maintenance, and productive, ensuring an excellent supply throughout the season.
Perfect for fresh eating, freezing, canning, and pickling, these beans hold their texture and flavor well in storage. Their straight pods make them easy to process, and the beautiful purple seeds with beige markings can also be used as shelly beans when fully matured.
Standard seed packets are also available for those needing smaller amounts. A great choice for any garden, whether for a big harvest or just a steady supply for the kitchen, Tendergreen Improved is easy to grow, produces well, and tastes great.
Disease Resistance: BCMV (Bean Common Mosaic Virus).
Planting Instructions for Tendergreen Improved Bean Seeds
Sow beans 1-2″ deep, 2-6″ apart, in rows 18-36″ apart, in full sun after danger of frost. Soaking bean seeds in water 1-2 hours before planting speeds germination. Germination occurs in 4-16 days in soil 60-85°F. Provide support for heirloom pole bean varieties. For snap beans, harvest when beans are 3-6″ long. For dry beans, leave pods on plants until pods are dry, brown, and crisp, and beans are hard and rattle in pod, if more drying is needed when danger of frost has arrived, pick pods or pull entire plant and hang upside down to dry further.
