A staple for market growers and large plantings, ‘Stowell’s Evergreen’ has been grown since 1848, when Nathaniel Stowell of Burlington, New Jersey, first developed it. This heirloom comes from a stabilized cross between the now-extinct ‘Menomony’ and ‘Northern Sugar’ corns. Though its exact first commercial listing is uncertain, it was widely available by the late 1850s. Its introduction to the seed trade is well known—Stowell sold just two ears to a “friend” for $4 under an agreement that it was for private use only, but the “friend” later resold the seed for $20,000 to Thoburn and Company, which then released it commercially.
Regarded as the “King of All White Sweet Corn Varieties,” this heirloom produces 8–9″ ears filled with plump, tender white kernels in 16–18 rows. The 8–10′ stalks grow tall, setting 1–2 ears per plant.
This drought-tolerant variety grows well in full sun and adapts to different conditions. Its sweet flavor makes it a favorite for fresh eating, roasting, and preserving. It cans and freezes well, keeping its texture and flavor long after harvest, making it a practical option for bulk growers and families putting up food for the year. Also available in standard seed packets for those who need smaller quantities.
