(Borago officinalis)
Borage (A.K.A. Burrage, Beebread, Beeplant, Talewort)
Days to Maturity: 50–60 Days
Native to the Mediterranean, borage is a fast-growing annual reaching 1–3 feet tall with wrinkled gray-green leaves and bright blue, star-shaped flowers. It thrives in full sun, tolerates poor soil, and reseeds itself easily. The leaves have a mild cucumber flavor, and the flowers are edible—perfect for salads, teas, or garnishes. Borage is a favorite among pollinators, especially bees, and is also known for its historical use in easing fevers and chest discomfort. It’s a natural source of vitamins A and C, and potassium, with seeds rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Warning: Contains compounds that may harm the liver if consume regularly or in large amounts. Do not consume during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Always consult a doctor before using medicinally.

(Foeniculum vulgare azoricum)
Florence Fennel (A.K.A. Finocchio)
Days to Maturity: 65 Days
A beloved heirloom in Mediterranean kitchens, Florence fennel has been cultivated for centuries for its crisp, sweet bulbs and feathery fronds. Traditionally valued for its culinary versatility and medicinal benefits, it was used to ease digestive troubles, respiratory ailments, and even visual problems. This cool-weather crop thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade, producing tall, 36–72″ fronds and large 4–6″ white bulbs with a juicy, mild anise-like flavor. The bulbs are excellent sliced raw, caramelized in sautés, or roasted for a mellow sweetness, while the fronds are used for seasoning fish, eggs, sauces, and brewed in teas. Even young shoots serve well as microgreens. Florence fennel stores well when kept cool and dry, holding its flavor for weeks. Rich in fiber, vitamin C, and potassium, it’s a healthy and flavorful addition to the table.

(Ocimum basilicum)
Basil – Italian Large Leaf (A.K.A. Sweet Basil)
Days to Maturity: 60–90 Days
Introduced from Italy in the late 1700s, this classic Genovese-type heirloom is treasured for both culinary and medicinal uses. Plants grow 24–36″ tall and spread 15–24″ wide, with large, glossy, medium-dark green leaves 3–4″ long. Thriving in full sun and adapting well to containers, it’s well-suited for patios, balconies, and kitchen gardens. White blooms appear in late summer and attract pollinators, though pinching them back encourages fuller growth. Milder and sweeter than standard Genovese, it’s ideal for those who prefer gentler pestos, tomato sauces, soups, and salads. Traditionally used to soothe colds, nausea, and skin irritations. Disease resistant and rich in vitamins A, C, and K, it’s a flavorful, healthful favorite for gardens big and small.

Great arugula!

Grows great! We let it go too seed in the summer. It is now late November in Michigan. We’ve had heavy frosts almost nightly for the past 2 weeks and it’s still green and growing.
