Marconi Red Sweet Pepper

Days to Maturity: 70 – 90 Days from transplant.

Sun Requirements: Full sun. (In very hot climates they may benefit from light shade.)

Botanical Name: (Capsicum annuum)

The Red Marconi Sweet Pepper is one of the largest Italian-type sweet peppers, prized for its excellent flavor, large size, and versatility in the kitchen. An heirloom from Italy, this variety produces long, tapered fruits that can reach up to 12 inches in length and 3 inches across at the shoulders. The peppers start off green and gradually ripen to a deep, glossy red, developing their sweetest flavor at full maturity. They have a deliciously sweet and slightly smoky flavor, with thin walls and a crisp texture that make them perfect for both fresh and cooked dishes.

The plants are sturdy and bushy, reaching 18-24 inches tall, and set a heavy yield of large, flavorful fruits throughout the season. Whether grown in garden beds or containers, they thrive in full sun and warm conditions, making them a fantastic choice for gardeners looking for an easy-to-grow, high-producing pepper.

Red Marconi peppers are excellent for fresh eating, adding a sweet crunch to salads and sandwiches. Their size and shape make them perfect for stuffing with meats, cheeses, or grains, and they roast beautifully, bringing out even more sweetness and a hint of smokiness. They are also great for grilling, sautéing, or adding to sauces and stir-fries.

Beyond their great flavor, these peppers are packed with nutrients, providing an excellent source of vitamins A and C. Their bright red color signals a high antioxidant content, making them a healthy and delicious addition to any meal.

Planting Instructions for Red Marconi Sweet Pepper Seeds

Red Marconi Peppers are heat loving plants that are easy to grow, and do well in a variety of climates. Start Heirloom / Open Pollinated Pepper seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost. Soaking Pepper seeds for 2-8 hrs before planting helps speed germination. Plant ¼” deep in chosen containers. Germination will occur in 8-25 days at 75-90°F. Keep soil evenly moist (not soaked) for best germination. Harden off Pepper plants, then transplant to garden about 2-4 weeks after the last frost date. Plant in full sun, spacing about 12-18″ apart, in rows 24-30″ apart.

Harvest can occur when Red Marconi Peppers are firm and full sized, but still green, or when mature and full color for the variety (mature peppers can deteriorate quickly so keep a careful eye at harvest time). The less green the Heirloom / Open Pollinated Pepper the sweeter the flavor. It is best to use a knife or pruning clippers when harvesting to avoid damage to plant.
