Planting Instructions for Abe Lincoln Tomato Seeds

Start Heirloom Abe Lincoln Tomato seeds indoors about 6–8 weeks before your last expected frost. Sow the seeds ¼” deep in a sterile seed starting mix. Keep the soil temperature between 70–90°F, and you should see germination within 6–14 days.

Once the seedlings develop their first true leaves, transplant them into 3–4″ pots, placing them in a spot with full light and slightly cooler temperatures, ideally between 60–70°F. After they’ve been hardened off and the soil has warmed, set the transplants out in full sun, spacing them 18–30″ apart in rows 3–4 feet apart.

If your seedlings are tall or spindly, plant them deeper than normal—tomato stems can sprout roots, helping to anchor and strengthen the plant. To ward off blossom end rot, add a tablespoon of lime, ground oyster shells, or crushed eggshells to the bottom of the planting hole. This extra calcium supports strong cell wall development once fruiting begins.

For robust growth, also add a tablespoon each of aged compost and bone meal to the planting hole. These additions help provide essential nutrients as the plants begin to take off.

I just planted them recently in small containers that I presently keep inside. They all came up almost right away and are about an inch tall at this point. That’s about all I can say for now, but I’m expecting good results!
