Planting Instructions for Black Cherry Tomato Seeds

Start Heirloom / Open Pollinated Black Cherry Tomato seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date. Plant the Tomato seeds ¼” deep in sterile seed starting mix. Germination occurs in 6-14 days in soil 70-90°F. Once true leaves develop, separate Heirloom / Open Pollinated Black Cherry Tomato plants into 3-4″ pots, placing in full light & cooler temps (60-70°F). Set out hardened off Tomato transplants, in full sun, once soil has warmed, 18-30″ apart, in rows 3-4′ apart. Plant tall, spindly Black Cherry Tomato seedlings deeper, the stems will sprout roots and support and strengthen the plant. To help prevent blossom end rot, put 1 Tbs of lime, ground oyster shells, or crushed eggshells at the bottom of your planting hole. The calcium will help build strong cell walls once your heirloom tomatoes plants start producing fruit. For strong tomato plants, add 1 Tbs of aged compost and 1 Tbs of bone meal to the bottom of the hole as well.

FAQ:

What makes the Black Cherry Tomato unique?

The Black Cherry Tomato is prized for its rich, sweet flavor, characteristic of black tomatoes, combined with the convenience of a cherry tomato size. The fruits are about 1½ inches in diameter, perfectly round, and have a deep red-black color with tender skins and medium-thick walls, making them both flavorful and versatile.

How long does it take for Black Cherry Tomatoes to mature?

Black Cherry Tomatoes mature in approximately 65-80 days, offering gardeners a relatively quick and bountiful harvest.

What type of plant is the Black Cherry Tomato?

The Black Cherry Tomato is an indeterminate variety, meaning it grows and produces fruit continuously throughout the season. The plants are large and vigorous, reaching heights of 4-8 feet, and are highly productive, delivering a steady supply of these flavorful fruits.

How should Black Cherry Tomato seeds be planted?

To grow Black Cherry Tomatoes, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep in sterile seed-starting mix at 70-90°F. Germination occurs in 6-14 days. Once seedlings develop true leaves, transplant them into 3- to 4-inch pots and provide full light at cooler temperatures of 60-70°F. Harden off the plants before transplanting them outdoors in full sun, spacing them 18-30 inches apart in rows 3-4 feet apart.

How can I prevent blossom end rot and ensure strong Black Cherry Tomato plants?

To prevent blossom end rot, add one tablespoon of lime, ground oyster shells, or crushed eggshells to the planting hole to provide calcium. Enrich the soil with one tablespoon each of aged compost and bone meal. Plant tall seedlings deeper to encourage root growth along the stem, which will result in stronger plants capable of producing a large, consistent harvest.

I just planted my seeds for this year, so I don’t have anything to review, but I am always happy with my St. Clare purchases. The first year I bought from St. Clare, I carefully planted two seeds in each pot to ensure germination. Not only did every seed sprout, but some of my pots had three or four sprouts! I don’t know how that happened! I learned my lesson and now I plant only ONE St. Clare seed per pot.

    More than great

  5. Anita M. (verified owner)

The seedlings were healthy and strong early on. I germinated them in seed starter pods on warming mats and kept them moist and covered until they sprouted. I augmented natural light with some grow lights until they got big enough to transfer to small pots. Plants are now huge and I should have ripe tomatoes in a couple of weeks.

  6. Barbara (verified owner)

Plants are growing well but no fruit yet. I am more than hopeful that I will have an abundance of fruit.
