How Open-Pollinated, Heirloom, Hybrid, and GMO Seeds Differ

Heirloom seeds are open-pollinated varieties that have been preserved and passed down for generations, typically for 50 years or more, and are valued for their consistent traits, rich history, and ability to be reliably saved and replanted. Open-pollinated seeds, which include heirlooms as well as more recent naturally pollinated varieties, are fertilized by wind, insects, or other natural methods and produce offspring true to type when properly isolated. Hybrid seeds are the result of controlled crossbreeding between two distinct parent lines to achieve specific characteristics such as uniformity or disease resistance; however, seeds saved from hybrids often do not replicate the parent traits. GMO seeds are developed through genetic engineering in a laboratory, introducing genes from unrelated species to achieve targeted traits, and are not used in organic or home gardening seed collections.
