(Daucus carota) 75-80 days. The Black Nebula Heirloom / Open-Pollinated Carrot is a unique, dark purple (almost black-colored) carrot. The hue reaches throughout the root. Roots are 9-10 inches long and tapered. Black Nebula taste best when eaten young or roasted, and remain purple even when cooked (an unusual trait with the more rare colored veggies). Another neat use for these beautiful carrots is to try the roots for egg or fabric dye. When these carrots become too large to eat, let the plants bolt and use the beautiful purple flowers for cutting! Even the stems are purple and attractive.
Planting Instructions for Black Nebula Carrot Seeds
Black Nebula Carrots grow best in well prepared, deeply worked, loose soil. Direct seed Carrots in full sun or part shade (in hot climates), from early spring-summer , ¼ – ½” deep, approx. 4 seeds per inch, in rows 12-16″ apart. Germination occurs in 6-21 days at temperatures of 50-75° F. Thin the plants to 1-3″ apart. To prevent green shoulders you can hill 1-2″ of soil around plants when 7-10 leaves have formed. A good mulch of organic material (such as grass clippings) is very beneficial once carrots are established. Harvest when Black Nebula carrots have brightened in color, when color has deepened.
