(Physalis ixocarpa) 68 days       Makes a very attractive purple salsa. The Purple Tomatillo plant is also very attractive, with purple veins in the leaves, and light green to buff colored husks on the tomatillo themselves. The Purple Tomatillo has a sharper flavor and is sweeter than the green variety. Can be eaten fresh, but most popular in sauces, salsas, stewed, fried, or made into pastes. A delicious combination for salsa includes tomatillos, tomatoes, peppers, purple onion, garlic, and fresh herbs like basil, thyme and oregano. Stores well for a tomatillo, stores longest when removed from husks and placed in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Planting Instructions for Purple Tomatillo Seeds

Purple Tomatillo may be direct seeded in long season climates, otherwise it is recommended to start indoors 4-6 wks. before last frost date. When direct seeding Tomatillos, plant ¼” deep. Plant in full sun or with afternoon shade in hot climates. Thin to 12-24″ apart. Heirloom / Open Pollinated Tomatillos like an average water supply. Tomatillo plants are self supporting, but do sprawl, so caging or trellising is recommended in small gardens. Heirloom / Open Pollinated Tomatillo fruits are mature when husks are light tan, and fruits split the husk.
